There are three ladies in the novel. First one is married to a man for years and mother of many kids from him. He cheats on her, and goes to many ladies including governess of his kids but the wife could not leave him, coz where would she go if she leaves him, there is no future for her economically and socially.
Second lady, a young girl seeking a suitable boy to marry coz there is no future prospects in society for a single lady, what will happen after her parents are no more. If she fails to get a decent boy / proposal, what would she do.
Third lady, the heroin of the novel, Anna, already married having a baby boy, got hitched with a young captain, her husbands finds out, the captain is not ready to take her responsibility and she gets scared what if her husband gets her out of his home, where would she go, how she would survive. And when she leaves her husband and lives-in with the captain and finally the love drains out of their relationship and jealousy substitutes love, she is again scared what if her lover would leave her, where would she go and how to survive.
And all these ladies are from aristocracy. Think about the status of common girls and women at that time in Souviet society.
